Heather Tanja, Acrylic Paintings on Wood

Apr 2009 to May 2009, Downtown Kalamazoo

Exhibit is up through Friday, May 29th.

When I create a piece, I am usually trying to explore a mood. I start by building up layers of color. Cadmium red makes me instantly warm and alive in winter. I carve into the paint to reveal the layers, and often I will add some collaged doodle or environmental texture.

Faces are my favorite subjects because so much is hidden and revealed at the same time. Most of us have layers of feeling based on our past experience, and we are constantly responding to the joy and pain around us. I like to contrast colors and simple materials with complicated truths.
