Erin LaRocque, Paintings
Dec 2006 to Jan 2007, Downtown Kalamazoo
“Perilous Pastures” is showing through the end of January.
“Perilous Pastures” is a series of paintings that present a voyeuristic glimpse into an eerie alternate world. Common farm animals here are not the mindless herded creatures that they are usually thought to be. These creatures personify the ulterior motives, mischief, curiosity, defiance, elation, horror and boredom that are generally thought of as being distinctly human states of mind.
I use many different techniques to create this parallel realm, including collage, spray paint, stencils, screen print, and various methods of applying paint. The unexpected surface qualities that come from experimentation help to contribute to the peculiarity of the scene itself.
