Artist Statement
I have always been interested in archaeology and the idea of things being buried or hidden and then recovered. I especially like the thought of things being aged by the earth, deteriorated, discovered, and put back together. With this body of work, I have tried to recreate this natural process. All of the work here has been pit-fired—the pieces were buried in sawdust and/or straw that was set on fire and allowed to smolder overnight, creating a smokey, aged-in-the-earth finish. Due to extreme temperatures, cracks are inevitable, but in the end add to the ancient appearance of the work.
